Not so much a caricature of a person but a car. It's a 57 Ford from back in the day. <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/artmonger/photoart/more%20photos/gunslinger1.png"> http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/artmonger/photoart/more%20photos/gunslinger1.png

Life drawing in Illustrator tonight!

Posted on 2009.01.08 at 02:23
This is a life drawing of a model named Danielle. She is a regular at Dr. Sketchy's (next one is on the 27th at the Beachland Tavern I think, BTW if you wanna go but this was the life drawing group at Murray Hill) She's pretty cool with the Betty Page n' all. She was interesting to talk to too FWIW. Anyways, I wanted some more practice in Illustrator with the flesh tones. I honestly was expecting a nude model when I showed up as we mostly draw nudes at MHLD. I'm really looking forward to messing around with the flesh tones in illustrator on a nude which got me out traveling through DT during rush hour in the ice and snow (starts at 6pm). This took about 2 hours. This was a long pose. I did the whole body but only finished the face so that's what you see obviously. She was across the room as I got there late and it was hard to see. I had an idea tonight BTW, bringing binoculars to a LD gig would help if you were far away... (I couldn't quite make out the shape of her nose in the first sitting. Saw her close up in the intermission an figured out her nose... ) Anyways, she's pretty neat and is dating the Dr. Sketchy's dude. She apparently models for Barris now (he's the guy who designed and built the 60's batmobile and the Dragula and the Red Baron.) Apparently he took one look at her and was like "you're the girl I need for my work"... She met him at some cool show last year. Anyways she's into cars n' stuff. So here's her picture. Got some Auto Trader's that focus on the hot rod and custom cars on the way home. Thinking about advertising in them if possible. I thought it was kind of a busy request for such a business but it ended up a lot better than I had imagined. I'm going to tone it down some tomorrow and take out some of the shading to make it a simpler design but other than that it's finished and they loved it.

Friends of the fambly

Posted on 2008.12.26 at 11:43
This was the rough draft of everybody all together. They changed their mind and wanted each family drawn separately. I liked the rough so much that I basically used it without many changes. There was one family that wanted to make funny faces. I don't know if the likenesses are good or not. The customer (my grandma's neighbor who we grew up with) wanted me to draw each person separately too. It would have been next to impossible to do that with the references they gave me for everybody (I never met most of these people) so I went down a couple of nights before Christmas when everybody was there and drew them in person. It was laid back and pretty fun. I got to meet everybody and the neighbor actually tipped me $100 for coming over which was pretty darned cool!

I wonder if I could have gotten away with it if I hadn't known these people. (something interesting to note is that this simple graphic style is easy to trace and transfer to another piece of paper if the need arises. Like you know, if your dog happens to eat two of the drawings the night before you deliver them... Just pull the pieces out of his mouth, tape the slobbery edges together and trace them!)

scooter paintin

Posted on 2008.12.07 at 22:57
This is a painting I did of my friend Autumn on her scooter. I did this in Adobe Illustrator and it took about 20 hours. This is way longer than I expected to take on this. It was a good lesson for me as far as being an example of something that would take a long time and also how much is involved. For instance, if I make the vehicle really compicated, if the person is PART of the vehicle, I will also have to render them in a complicated manner to be sure the two parts of the image relate to one another.

Photobucket is on the fritz again apparently...

pointless gifts

Posted on 2008.12.02 at 03:17
Each year we have a hell of a time convincing our family that we do NOT want them to go out and buy us stuff and that we really would rather not go out and buy them stuff either. We would like to MAKE gifts, buy hand made gifts from a local artisan, exchange things that have been collected over the past year (wether they be bought someplace special, crafted or found) buy something that was previously USED/recycled or give whatever denomination they were going to spend on a gift to a charity like Heifer International.

Really one of the best things about Thanksgiving is that it's the one day of the year when we are supposed to be thankful for the things that we have. How many of us really are grateful for what we have though? Consider all of the things that each one of us has to be thankful for that we take for granted every day! Food, water, shelter, love, life, freedom, knowledge, family, transportation, employment, (and on and on...) What do any of US need that we don't already have and why do we need to get it from somebody else on a certain day of the year? There are so many people in the world that don't have access to many of the most basic things we possess and don't even think about. Sadly, our consumption and consequent waste directly effect these people in many ways that are harmful to them and their environment (and our own I might add)

I'm not trying to get on the soap box so much as give a reason for why I personally don't want my family to buy me stuff.

My parents actually commented on the futility of getting into the gift exchange between siblings this year. Each of them puts a piece of paper with their name and what they want into a hat. The gift can be anything up to $20 or $30. You know what every single person said they wanted this year? A gift card for some store for that amount. Why not just have everybody sit in a circle, have them take $30 out of your wallet and pass it to the left?  Take that $$ to the store and buy something with it your self for yourself?! Isn't this the perfect metaphor for pointless gift giving? Why not make a point to not give pointless gifts this year?!

What creative things do you do for the holidays that DON'T involve being a typical holiday consumer?

hee hee!

One sided argument for the democratic party

Posted on 2008.11.01 at 13:00
Please let me preface by saying that I know not everyone is in to politics and it is not polite dinner conversation in most cases. So If you're not interested or are bothered by the possibility of a difference of opinion, you probably will not read any further and that's fine and I don't wanna bug ya so don't worry about it. That said, it is less than a week before the election, and I think something should be said in favor of your candidate whomever it may be. Now's the time folks! And by all means if you have a challenging opinion, I by all means welcome you to post your thoughts as a comment below. As I have stated, there's no better time than now. If you wish to discuss a topic, I will be pleased to engage you as long as the exchange stays between the lines of polite discussion.

A friend of mine posted this (very long post) and a lot of it I'd seen before but there was a particularly thought provoking essay at the very bottom of the post concerning white privilege. If you don't have any idea of who you might vote for it may give you an idea of what the issues are and how supporters of a particular candidate choose to see them. If you have already made up your mind one way or the other, it may give you a new perspective. It is admittedly one sided (why would I repost ideas I disagree with?) but there are several arguments to be made for the candidate I support that I think everyone should see and that clearly answer the opponent's challenges sufficiently. If you disagree you are welcome to comment, as I said.

Thanks to Ron Fowler for putting this post together:
___________________________________________________________________

Dear family and friends.

Less then a week to go till this country elects a new president of the United States of America. I come to you as an American, small business owner, a traveler of the World and as a soon to be parent. Stacy and I are excepting a baby girl in the next few weeks, our due date is Nov 9th. I have always been interested in politics but as my life is changing I am not just going to sit back and just vote. I have taken a few more steps and have gotten involved in this election. I have 3 signs in my front yard, 2 stickers on my van and have made some calls at the local Obama office and stamped out a few thousand campaign buttons in support. There are many things in government I am not happy with and I will keep doing my part even after this election no matter what the outcome. Democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is held completely by the people under a free electoral system. We need to take this power back and force Washington to change. They will not change without us.

The cycle of getting elected and then start campaigning at day one after an election has got to stop. These people we elected to an office in order to run this country not run a campaign. Also elections should be paid for by us and should not go on for 2 years. Most people are sick of this, its been almost 2 years ago the Dems, Reps and other 3rd parties started putting people up to run for president. I feel I know every bit of dirty laundry about the candidates except Sarah Palin who has only been in the spotlight for 7 weeks and what has come out about her scares me to death. Fruit flies, what the VP does, women's rights, marriage, abuse of power in Alaska and so many other things she stands for goes against the Constitution and our freedoms. Do your research. This years 2008 election will cost $5.3 billion ($5,300,000,000) A ruling by the Supreme court said that "Money" is a form of free speech. That is fine if you have all the money then you have a biggest voice (aka Lobbyists / 527s). In this judgement the rich have a strong voice in the way things get done, so much for the rest of us and the common good.

Please help America be great again. America is still a great nation but in the past 8 years we have been slipping away from our values and standing in the World. Now to top off the past 8 years we are placing the World into a rescission due to our greed. Who am I... nobody.. really.. but I saw this coming years ago. I have some investments and knew to move them into investments in Europe and Asia. As home values shot up for no reason, people (and Government) maxed out there credit and refinanced there homes to pay for it. I saw this as digging an hole we were all going to fall into. The part I didn't see was that we were selling our debt to the whole World and telling them it was all backed up by good loans in the USA. This past month I have taken a loss in my investments as well as everyone else. I am still young and will bounce back, I just feel sorry for my parents generation who have lost 30% of there savings just before retirement.

On 9/11/01 we had the World on our side. We were all Americans and we all came together. Since then we have changed, and not always for the better. The one thing Bush said after 9/11 was for us to go shopping........ WHAT!....... At a time when we needed to pull together and support America and find the people responsible for this attack. I remember my Grandmother ( a Rosie the Ribitor) telling me about World War II and how her generation as Americans pulled together and donated nylons, copper and other items to help the war effort. In this election we hear a lot of talk about higher taxes, but the wars are not being funded. We are taking out loans from China and others to pay for these wars. If we are going to be in 2 wars, should we sacrifice and pay for it? Obama said he will raise your taxes 3% on earnings over $250,000 of income a year. He should call this a war tax and if you don't support the tax increase you don't support the troops. The surge in Iraq is working has been a big talking point in this election. The surge started in Jan of 2007 but the war started in March of 2003 and after all the problems of stay the course, no armor for the troops, torture, Guantanamo Bay, no funding for PTS.. ect. The surge is also part of us borrowing $10,000,000,000 a week in Iraq (which we will have to pay interest on). Part of this money is given away as a form of bribes so Iraqis will stop attacking our troops and each other, Sunnies and Shiites have been divided so infighting has stopped. To top this all off its an election year so no matter what it take ($10,000,000,000 a week) to stop the violence. This hasn't taken care of the violence but not the root of the problem.

At the start of this election 2 years ago I liked McCain compared to all the other Republicans that were in the race. He was a man of Honor, a few skeletons in his closet (Keating 4 Savings and Loan Bank plus 1 John McCain( http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=IDofbll86dY ) but a good guy. Now McCain seems to have done a 180 and is running a smear campaign against Obama. Then the choice of Palin as his VP. At first I thought it was a great idea but I thought Michael Palin was from England and could not run for this office. Oh... Sarah Palin.... Who? Now after these 7 weeks of seeing her and doing some research it went from a Who? to what the hell was McCain thinking. There is no way she should have been chosen to be VP. This has convinced me that McCain is not in charge and just doing what he is told by his party. This is them same party as G.W. Bush.

Take a chance, vote for Obama. Help bring respect back to America.

Thank you.

Ron Fowler

A family member sent me this video. This was my inspiration for this e-mail. Its a video telling why Obama and the democrats are responsible for the banking meltdown. This problem is too big for one party to take the blame. To top this off Greenspan this week told Congress on Thursday he is "shocked" at the breakdown in U.S. credit markets and said he was "partially" wrong to resist regulation of some securities. It is kinda like removing all police and letting people regulate themselves.

Let's blame the Democrats

No I'm not a scientist but a few years ago I heard on NPR about the first full decoding of DNA being done on fruit flies. This is because fruit flies are very basic in nature and this was a Worldwide effort. Mrs. Palin needs to do some research.

Palin has no idea what the VP of the President of the USA does. It reminds me of the Holiday Inn Express commercials. She can see the Moon from her house does that make her an astronaut?

ACORN, How they can call this voter fraud if nobody has even voted? Why do we have to register anyway? If we has a SS number and an address why can't this be done by the government and any one of its agencies? Pay taxes, your registered! Have a drivers license, your registered! You get the idea. ACORN knew the applications that were filed were fraudulent and (by law) had to turned all of them over to the government. Why all the fuss?

This is Your Nation on White Privilege

By Tim Wise (ZSpace: Sep 13, 2008)

"For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.

White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.

White privilege is when you can call yourself a "f___in' redneck," like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll "kick their f___in' a**," and talk about how you like to "shoot sh**" for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.

White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.

White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all p**s on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested."

White privilege is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.

White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you. White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was "Alaska first," and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she's being disrespectful.

White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think you're being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college--you're somehow being mean, or even sexist.

White privilege is being able to convince white women who don't even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a "second look."

White privilege is being able to fire people who didn't support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.

White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God's punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you're just a good church-going Christian, but if you're black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you're an extremist who probably hates
America.

White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a "trick question," while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O'Reilly means you're dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.

White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a "light" burden.

And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren't sure about that whole "change" thing. Ya know, it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.

White privilege is, in short, the problem."

Big ass photo dump!

These are from Potsdam, NY, Castine, ME, Charlston, WV and southern Ohio near Portsmouth on the Ohio river. (I got a new camera!) I have a lot of photos so enjoy.

But first off- who does this kid remind you of?

reflections of the adirondacks

Posted on 2008.09.25 at 01:33
Well, as you know, I really like to take the pictures of the water and stuff. The lakes were like mirrors in Adirondack National Forest so I took advantage of it!

This pretty road went on for about 10 miles near a river and a group of lakes. You can camp anywhere along here for free. I was so kicking myself that I didn't bring the kayak!!! ARG!!! In any case the road was a friggin dead end! DOUBLE ARG!!! And it was TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY!! TRIPLE ARG I SAY LADDY, NOW SWEEP THE POOPDECK!

Yes, I still like the trees too!

this is one of my favorites!

We took a little walk in the woods down to one of the lakes. It was pretty and we were jealous of the kayakers we saw. = (

Another favorite!

We were heading towards a town called Potsdam. We were staying the night in Canton, NY and they had kinda a pretty little park and a gigantic group of waterfalls. We went back the next day and took some more photos (it had been a long day) But Stacie has the camera and I'm alone in MN right now so I can't upload them. Will do later. Anyways, here's a couple of photos from that and one of about a dozen Stacie took of herself while i was in the shower. She's so dopey! (almost as dopey as me!) LOL- I love her!

Well, I think that's enough for right now. I have a long day of sightseeing in sunny Minnesota tomorrow! (Too bad I don't have a camera...)

Adirondacks and some more drawlings

I stopped by the road and found the prettiest stream. I would have spent all day here taking photos but Stacie was not feeling so good so I moved on and took a few more but it was a short road trip through the Green mountains this time. I did take about 60 photos of this stream however ; )

Next day I found myself at Paul Smith's, NY One of my favoritest places. The whole area is brimming with character, the mountains are breathtaking, the rivers are brown like coffee, the people are nice, the Saranac Lakes are beautiful and Paul Smith's lake is really cool too.

Here's some drawlings:

Vermont again and stuff

I realized I have some photos that I haven't ever uploaded so here, this is where I camped in Put In Bay this summer on the weekends. It has it's own private beach too. I took the kayak out a lot this summer and luckily got to enjoy this site several times for paddling around the island. Our friend Mike came up with a bunch of friends and I had the canoe and the kayak and we paddled from downtown to middle bass for lunch. That was an adventure!

Here's the computer room/office/shrine of bookshelves

The closet shelves and the hallway shelves (same in bathroom)

Here's the finished floor (after the flooding...)

My awesome Dumont tv conversion cabinet!

And here is the dog sleeping in my fire pit. ; )

Now last week Stacie and I went to Vermont, NY and MD then home. It was a long trip but we went up to VT a day early to do some sightseeing near Rutland/Castleton area. It's gorgeous there and we just happened to stumble on this freaking beautiful lake. There wasn't a house in 5 miles and we only saw 2 other people there while we were there. It was amazing!

Since my wife is so lovely I took a few photos of her too- hee hee!

As in Ithaca there is this cool hippie community (*or cult*) there that have this awesome eatery. It's all decorated with used materials like seat booths made of barrel wood, fireplaces made of used masonry, grapevines and straight up logs all over the place. It looks like a hobbit house and everybody has long hair, sandals and beards (except for the pretty girls who have long hair and amish looking dresses.) They make their own furniture out of found objects and cook all kinds of VERY tasty food and breads from scratch. They have their own coffee and mate tea company and they sell a bunch of healthy great smelling homeopathic remedies, soaps and balms. (we even got some hand made toothpaste!) It's definitely worth the trip if you find one of these places. I can't recommend it highly enough. They have them all over the place. They also had a great outfitters next door to it.

My only wish is that we could have visited again in a couple of weeks when the leaves start to turn more.
